The Madeira archipelago will be under a yellow warning on Sunday due to sometimes heavy rainturning into showers that may be accompanied by thunderstorms, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) reported this Friday.
The north and south coasts and the mountainous regions of the island of Madeira and Porto Santo will be under a yellow warning between 00:00 and 12:00 on Sunday. The IPMA also issued a yellow warning for the Faro district due to maritime disturbances that will be in effect between 00:00 and 23:00 on Sunday.
The Azores archipelago is also under yellow alert due to sometimes heavy rains, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms.
In the western group (Flores and Corvo) the warning will be in force until 12:00 p.m. this Friday, in the central group (Faial, Graciosa, S. Jorge, Terceira and Pico) until 6:00 p.m. today and in the eastern group ( S. Miguel and Santa María) until 6pm today.
On Thursday, the IPMA warned that the north and center of mainland Portugal will be affected between Sunday and Monday by a cold frontal surface, which will bring wind, rain and sea disturbances.
In a statement, the IPMA states that the cold frontal surface is associated with depression Bert (name given by the Irish Meteorological Service), which will appear on Saturday.
The yellow warning, the least serious on a scale of three, is issued whenever a risk situation occurs for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
