EU instructs Apple to use USB-C ports on iPhone by 2024

An agreement has been reached among lawmakers of the European Union on legislation that all future smartphones, including the Apple iPhone, will be equipped with universal USB-C chargers by the fall of 2024.

The Verge reports that EU lawmakers have reached an agreement on legislation that will require all smartphones to be sold in the EU in the future to have a USB-C charging port by fall 2024. The rules are about other devices such as tablets, digital cameras. , headphones and more. Laptops are expected to comply with the law, but have been given a longer period.

Although the law has been drafted in a variety of formats for more than a decade, agreement on the scope of the new rule was only reached this week after negotiations between several EU bodies.

European Parliament Rapporteur Alex Agius Saliba said in a press release: “We have now made the common charger a reality in Europe! European consumers have long been disappointed with the pile of chargers with every new device. Now they can use a single charger for all their portable electronics.

The move aims to reduce the waste of electronics and make life easier for consumers. Lawmakers are hoping that phones and other devices won’t have chargers in the box, as consumers already have a convenient charger in their homes. The EU believes the law could save consumers up to €250m per year on “unnecessary charger purchases” and reduce e-waste by 11,000 tonnes per year.

This situation will probably shake Apple, which has been using the Lightning port for iPhone devices for years. “If Apple wants to sell its products in our home market within two years, they must comply with our policies and have their devices USB-C,” spokesman Saliba said.
