The joint Egyptian-German archaeological mission working in the Matariya region “Heliopolis” succeeded in discovering granite stone blocks from King Khufu’s reign in the Temple of the Sun.
The delegation also discovered the foundations of the temple courtyard and many statues and altars built during the New Kingdom era, and completed excavations on the west side of the open museum on the obelisk of King Senusret I in the same year. mataria
Mostafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt, stressed the importance of this discovery, especially since antiques belonging to King Khufu’s reign were discovered for the first time in the area of Ain Shams. parts of unknown buildings or may have been moved from the area of the pyramids. Ayman Ashmawy, head of the Egyptian Antiquities Sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities and head of the mission on the Egyptian side, added that the mission had also managed to discover some evidence of the early existence of this site. Dietrich Rau, head of the mission on the German side, explained that the mission was also able to discover fragments of sarcophagi and altars from the reigns of Kings Amenemhat IV, Sobekhotep IV, Ay, Seti I, Osorkon I, Takelot I and Psamtik. I, as well as revealing a sculptural model, is a pedestal of a massive monkey statue from a quartz and pink granite baboon in the shape of King Amenhotep II’s Sphinx.
