Google is reportedly starting to notify some small business owners that they will soon pay to keep using their email and other apps after ten years of free use. “Actually, they are forcing us to upgrade to something paid after connecting to this free service,” one small business owner said.
New York Times It reports that Google informed small businesses earlier this year that they can no longer use its private email service and other business apps for free. For many business owners, this feels like a betrayal after years of using Google products.
New York Times Richard J. Dalton, Jr., a business owner who runs an exam preparation company in Vancouver, BC. spoke with. In 2008, Dalton created a business email at Google for his business Your Score Booster, and now says, “Actually, after connecting to this free service, they’re forcing us to upgrade to something they pay for.”
Google said users of the old free version of G Suite, which provides access to apps like email, Docs, and Calendar, should start paying about $6 per month per work email address. If a business does not voluntarily switch to a paid service before June 27, it will automatically switch to it. If they don’t pay by August 1, their account will be suspended.
Small business owners say the problem isn’t the price of the service, but how Google is handling the situation. Patrick Gant, owner of Ottawa-based marketing consulting firm Think It Creative, said, “I realized it was too small. It’s hard to feel sorry for someone who’s been free for so long, and now they’ve been told they have to pay for it. But a promise was kept. This motivated me to decide to choose Google over other alternatives. ”
But while some business owners are considering an alternative to Google, they say the company’s communication on the matter is too difficult. Samad Sajanlal, owner of Supreme Equipment Company in McKinney, Texas, which provides software consulting and other technical services, said, “I don’t care if you kick us out. But while you’re still deciding whether you really want to evacuate us, don’t give us unrealistic deadlines for us to go and find an alternative.”
