At least five dead in second earthquake that shakes eastern Afghanistan

At least five people died and 11 were injured in Afghanistan in a new earthquake that shook an area near the border with Pakistan on Friday, near where the earthquake that left thousands dead was recorded on Wednesday.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), this second earthquake of magnitude 4.3 (the first was 5.9 degrees) was recorded in western Pakistan, about 49 kilometers from the Pakistani city of Miran Shah and near the Afghan provinces of Khost and Paktika.

Taliban government spokesman Ahmadullah Wasig confirmed on Twitter that the smaller earthquake has already caused five deaths and 11 injuries in Pakitka province, the worst hit by Wednesday’s quake.

Quoted by Afghan media, the representative of the provincial governor, Sanaullah Masoom, indicated that the number of victims could increase in the coming hours.

In Pakistan, no victims of the incident have yet been identified.regional authorities from the country’s Disaster Management office told the Spanish news agency EFE.

Wednesday’s earthquake, which caused 1,150 deaths and another 1,600 injuries, caused incalculable damage to the region’s infrastructure, with buildings, homes, hospitals and schools affected or totally destroyed, also causing the interruption of communication and water services, roads and bridges. .
