Five dead and around 100 injured in earthquakes in southern Iran

Five people died and some 100 were injured this Saturday in Iran after three earthquakes that destroyed half of a town in the south of the country next to the Strait of Hormuz, announced the spokesman for the national emergency service.

These earthquakes occurred near the town of Sayeh Khosh, located 100 kilometers southwest of the port of Bandar Abbas, a city of half a million people located on the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the Iranian branch of the international Red Crescent humanitarian movement, the search and rescue operations are almost over.

In November 2021, in the same province, two earthquakes of magnitude 6.4 and 6.3 caused one death.

In 2003, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake partially destroyed the city of Bam (southeast) and killed at least 31,000 people.

A decade earlier, in 1990, around 40,000 people lost their lives after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit northern Iran.
