Seville is the first city in the world to classify heat waves

On the first day of the summer of 2022, the capital of Andalusia became the first city in the world to have a classification and nomenclature system for very hot periods, called “ProMETEO Seville”.

The news has been reported by El Confidencial, a newspaper to which the mayor of Seville has stated that the implementation of the system “will help plan and act in the face of climateespecially heat waves, which often hit the most vulnerable.”

The City Council ratifies its commitment to the fight against climate change through the reduction of emissions and decarbonisation and, secondly, through adaptation, to make Seville a resilient city with a model that really addresses change climate and the increase in heat”, said Antonio Muñoz.

The “Prometheus” classify hot flashes into 3 categories per year, sorting them in reverse order of the alphabet. The waves will also be classified from 1 to 3, with 3 being the most serious and 1 being the least serious.

Los Angeles, Miami, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Missouri, Melbourne and Athens also designed identical initiatives to the Spanish city, categorizing heat waves based on meteorological data and public health criteria.
