Amazon is finally breaking down fake reviews on its platform and is going after the admins of more than 10,000 Facebook groups used to coordinate fake reviews on the site.
Wall Street Magazine It reported that Amazon has sued the administrators of more than 10,000 Facebook groups used to coordinate fake reviews on its e-commerce platform.
Group admins request reviews for products ranging from tripods to car stereos in exchange for free items or money sent to reviewers. This is a direct violation of Amazon’s policies and happens on the company’s platform for the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Japan markets.
Amazon Vice President Dharmesh Mehta said the case constitutes “preemptive legal action against attackers.” The fake review issue has been a problem on the Amazon platform for years, especially during the pandemic when consumers are turning to e-commerce platforms to purchase.
Last year, the UK competition authority launched an investigation into how Amazon and Google thwarted fake reviews. One of the aforementioned Facebook groups is called “Amazon Product Review” and has more than 43,000 members. According to Amazon, Facebook removed the group this year, adding that the group avoided Facebook’s detection by changing letters to phrases that could warn Facebook of its nefarious intentions.
In 2019, US lawmakers questioned Amazon’s efforts to curb fake reviews in a letter to then-CEO Jeff Bezos. That same year, the Federal Trade Commission fined a retail website that first paid a third party to post a review on Amazon for using fake paid reviews.
