Death toll from Philippines earthquake rises to 10

The death toll from the earthquake that struck the island of Luzon in the Philippines on Wednesday has risen to ten, the Philippines National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) announced.

According to the most recent balance made by the NDRRMC, 375 people were injured, more than 300,000 were affected by the disaster and at least 34,000 had to leave their homes.

The earthquake caused earth movements and destroyed infrastructure. About fifty highways and seven bridges were affected, making traffic difficult.

The epicenter of the earthquake occurred in a mountainous area.

The Philippines sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of fault lines around the Pacific Ocean, where most of the world’s earthquakes occur.
