Electric vehicle owners are increasingly frustrated with the public electric vehicle charging situation, with drivers complaining of broken chargers, buggy software and cracked screens.
The Verge reports that EV owners are complaining about the state of public EV charging, including issues with broken chargers, broken software, and cracked screens. As part of its second annual Electric Vehicle Public Pay Survey, JD Power surveyed 11,554 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle owners from January to June 2022.
The company measured customer satisfaction with electric vehicle charging on a 1,000-point scale. The survey showed that charging satisfaction on the tier 2 general charger was worse than last year. Satisfaction with Tier 2 charging in 2022 decreased from 643 to 633 in 2021, while satisfaction with faster DC chargers remained stable at 674.
Brent Gruber, CEO of JD Power’s global automotive division, said: “The availability of public charging stations is not only a barrier, but EV owners continue to experience faulty equipment at the charging station.”
One-fifth of those surveyed said they never charged their car after finding a public charger. 72 percent of respondents said this was because the facility was out of service or out of service.
There are approximately 41,000 public charging stations in the US with more than 100,000 outlets. Tesla ranks high in customer satisfaction with its Level 2 wall chargers, which are often found in garages and hotels. They got 680 points out of 1000. The Tesla Supercharger network also scored 739, the highest among DC fast chargers.
Customers put Volta in second place behind Tesla with 667 points. ChargePoint was third with 639 points, SemaConnect was fourth with 557 points and Blink was fifth with 560 points.
