Drought: Reuse of non-potable water among the measures approved by the Leiria Region

Temporary suspension of non-essential uses of network water and reuse wastewater for non-potable uses are among a set of measures of the Intermunicipal Community of the Leiria Region to combat drought.

The ten municipalities that make up the Intermunicipal Community of the Leiria Region (CIMRL) approved, this Tuesday, a set of measures to face the period of drought that the region and the country are going throughmentioned the CIMRL on this day, pointing out that some of the actions are already in the field and that others will now begin to be implemented.

Irrigation of gardens and green areas, refilling of swimming pools, decorative fountains, temporary suspension of non-essential uses of network water, in particular, street washing, and activities with large water consumption and the reuse of wastewater for non-potable usesas in the washing of containers, are some of the approved measures.

The mayors also decided to go ahead with the promotion of awareness campaigns on the need for the rational use of water, as well as a survey of solutions to be adopted locally”,considering the specificities of each of the municipalitiesand whose execution will take place immediately”.

The CIMRL also admitted the “possibility of selective interruptions in the most critical supply systems, as a way to contribute to the the necessary stabilization of consumption and expensive to the capture capacity.

In addition to the initiatives agreed upon at this meeting, there are more than a dozen other contingency measures recommended by the Government, with special adherence to the program for the installation of consumption-reducing taps in public fountains, public buildings, including schools, health centers, sports facilities, among others, as well as the adoption of urgent measures to protect water bodies subject to the effects of burned areas.

The municipalities, in coordination with the national and regional public entities with competences in the areas of the environment, water resources and agriculture, will strengthen awareness-raising actions so that agricultural irrigation is carried out at night and will intensify control actions in catchments and illegal connections, as well as these activities represent high levels of consumption in critical periods.

CIMRL is part of Alvaiázere, Ansião, Batalha, Castanheira de Pera, Figueiró dos Vinhos, Leiria, Marinha Grande, Pedrógão Grande, Pombal and Porto de Mós.
