We have already talked about the E-Transit, Ford’s largest van, with capacity and volume, which is now available in Portugal and which we have already had the opportunity to drive, as you can see below. But in addition to the E-Transit, the North American manufacturer is preparing a series of other smaller commercials and the E-Transit Custom will be the second to go on the market, but it also promises to be the one that the public will like the most which traditionally acquires, according to Ford, the best-selling commercial on the market.
We drive the electric Transit and tell you how it went
Unlike the great E-Transit, which derives from the model we already know, the new E-Transit Custom is presented as the next generation, with slimmer headlights, a distinctive and more “closed” grille, which gives it a more modern look. Custom will be available at two versions, with two wheelbases and two levels of ceiling height, to house 5.9 m inside3 or 9 meters3 load. The new E-Transit Custom also has the ability to carry up to 1,100 kg of cargo or tow up to 2,000 kg.
Like E-Transit, the new Custom offers two motors, with 100 kW and 160 kW, which corresponds to 136 hp and 218 hp, always with a force of 415 Nm. The battery has a useful capacity of 74 kWh, higher than the 68 kWh of the E-Transit. However, the American press claims that the Custom battery uses the most recent cells from Ford, used in the F-150 Lightning pick-up, which have 12% more energy density.
The rear suspension is independent, fixed on a new aluminum subframe, solution that improves behavior and comfort, but is primarily aimed at creating more space for the package of batteries on the platform. The accumulator enjoys an AC charging system of up to 11 kW, which requires just under 8 hours to fully recharge, and can also accept DC charges of up to 125 kW, requiring 41 minutes to go from 10% to 80% charge. . More than that, Ford points out that, in just 5 minutes, Custom can recharge energy to travel another 38 kmwhich helps when there is little left to go back to the company or get home.
The capacity of the battery, associated with the expected consumption, seems to point to a autonomy of 380 km in WLTP, a value yet to be confirmed. If so, the range between recharges of the E-Transit Custom is assumed to be one of the best on the market for this type of vehiclewith Ford reminding that its customers operating in urban areas rarely exceed 90 km per day.
Inside, Ford’s electric van offers the connectivity needed to transform the vehicle into a office on wheelswith the E-Transit Custom also serving as a traveling workshop. Two power outlets use battery power, intended for locomotion, to power power tools, from drills to sanders, through paint compressors, among others.
The Ford E-Transit Custom destined for the European market will be produced in Kocaeli, in the factory that the brand has in Turkey. The first units will leave the assembly line in fall 2023Well, there is still more than a year left for the first customers to make one of these new Ford electric vans their own, the prices of which will be announced closer to the date chosen for the start of marketing.
