The damage caused by Hurricane Fiona in the Dominican Republic exceeds 20,000 million pesos (390 million euros), indicated a preliminary estimate, presented this Monday by the country’s president, Luis Abinader.
In a press conference attended by a large number of government officials, Abinader stated that the the more difficult it will be to assess the damage caused to the agricultural sectorseverely affected, which has already been promised “strong measures” to help normalize production and farms as soon as possible.
Given the scenario of destruction, after the passage of Fiona a week ago, the Dominican head of state requested that a state of emergency be declared for 45 days in 12 provinces, to accelerate recovery actions.
The measure has already been approved in the Chamber of Deputies and will go to the Senate.
Energy services are restored by 97% in the most affected areas and water services by 91%, with 67 aqueducts already operational and 14 out of service, which affects more than 109,000 customers.
Regarding housing, Abinader said that to date, rebuilt about 4,650 houseswhich represents approximately 53% of those damaged. Hundreds of thousands of food items were distributed, as well as household appliances, mattresses and equipment of emergency
all the the health service works and the schools work at 40% in the affected regionshaving been 92% of traffic restored on local roads and secondary roads.
