Convertible plane: electric passenger plane completes 8-minute test flight

An all-electric passenger plane made its first 8-minute test flight on Tuesday. A nine-passenger airplane prototype named Alice was built by startup Eviation, which it says “opens a new era of aviation.”

The plug-in aircraft made two wide turns around the airport and emitted a “buzzing sound” for eight minutes in the air, “a flutter of air from the propellers in the rear of the fuselage.” statement Seattle Times.

It was reported that Alice “blew several loud horns while the pilot started the engines” as she took a taxi to the terminal.

The aircraft was designed and manufactured by startup company Eviation to demonstrate the potential of an electric commercial commuter aircraft capable of flying several hundred miles at an altitude of about 15,000 feet.

“Can the batteries in the prototype aircraft provide enough power to propel the certified aircraft? The answer is no, absolutely not,” says Eviation CEO Greg Davis, who says Alice is not a design the company plans to do later.

Davis said his company still needs advances in battery technology to make the Eviation drone commercially viable.

“This is truly a new era in aviation,” Davis said. “This is the first radical change in aviation propulsion technology since we moved from the Super Constellation to the 707, from the piston engine to the jet engine and now electric propulsion.”

Electric vehicles are now ready to take to the skies, as Air Canada also announced this month that it has ordered 30 spare aircraft from Swedish electric aircraft startup Heart Aerospace. The electric aircraft is expected to have a range of 124 to 248 miles on a single charge.
