Pavel Kosintsev, chief researcher at the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, announced that scientists found the remains of a small mammoth in Yamal.
“This year, we uniquely discovered the remains of a mammoth that was no more than six years old and in good condition. Scientists discovered the largest part of its skeleton, including the proboscis. This includes remnants of soft tissue, fur, skin, eyes and ears. This is the first time we have seen mammoths in such a condition.”
He added that the first to find this mammoth were local residents, who informed the Local Heritage Museum in Tazovsky in the Yamal Nenets Autonomous Region. The museum organized a scientific expedition to the location of the mammoth and some samples were taken for analysis.
“Based on the results of the examination of these specimens, we can restore the natural conditions in which this mammoth lived. Of course, what is interesting is its body. It is true that scientists have found mammoth bodies before, but not a mammoth of this age among them.”
