COP27. Renewable energy association points to pressure to protect natural gas and nuclear power

The Portuguese Association of Renewable Energies (APREN) regretted on Tuesday the lack of a “broader commitment” at the COP27 climate summit and pointed out the pressure from some countries to protect the natural gas and electricity businesses from nuclear sources.

“APREN welcomes the effort made by all the parties involved, but, given the current climate emergency, and taking into account the reinforced plans of the European Union, such as ‘Fit for 55’ and REPowerEU, A deeper and broader commitment to a sustainable future was needed.”defended the association, in a statement.

APREN considered that, at the summit that took place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, and whose final declarations were closed on Sunday, “several points of concern remained to be addressed, which prevent a more immediate response to the climate emergency.”

Among these points is the desire to promote “low emission” energies, which may include natural gas or nuclear.

“This is a point that APREN does not welcome and that is a clear sign of pressure from some countries present at COP27 to protect their natural gas and electricity businesses of nuclear origin,” the association said.

Furthermore, despite the fact that some countries, led by India, wanted a commitment to phase out all fuels (and not just coal, as defined at COP26), “the proposal ended up failing and was not included”, regretted the LEARNING.

COP27 ended on Sunday with the adoption of two main texts, a final declaration and a resolution on compensation for the damage caused by climate change suffered by vulnerable countries, which APREN welcomes.
