More than 70 dead in Iran in a week of protests

The non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights (IHR) announced on Tuesday that Iranian security forces killed 72 people, 56 of whom were in Kurdish regions, during the last week of a crackdown on anti-regime demonstrations.

The total balance amounts to 416 dead since the protest movement began unleashed in Iran on September 16 by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman who was violently attacked and detained by the “morality police”, tasked with enforcing the strict dress code for women.

Mahsa Amini’s death sparked a wave of protests for women’s rights. “It could be the harbinger of a new era in Iran”

The “morality police” considered that the young woman was breaking the code, because, although she wore the hijab (Islamic veil), she left part of her hair exposed. The same day that she was arrested in Tehran, on September 13, she was taken to the hospital in a coma, ending up dying three days later.

Among those killed in protests held for two months across the country, there are 51 children and 21 womenaccording to Oslo-based IHR.

Over the past week, most of the deaths have been in the Kurdish regions of western Iran, where Tehran has sent reinforcements due to intensifying popular unrest.

Demonstrations took place in several cities, Mahabad, Javanrud and Piranchahr, often in connection with funeral ceremonies for people killed by law enforcement during previous protests.

The Hengaw group, which defends the rights of Iran’s Kurds, also based in Norway, accused the authorities of having fired live ammunition at the protesterss.
