The districts of Faro and Beja are today under an orange warning due to the forecast of periods of rain or showers, sometimes strong and accompanied by gusts, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).
The notice in these two districts will last until 3:00 p.m. on Monday, then it will change to yellow until 6:00 p.m.
Faro and Beja are also under yellow notice due to the possibility of frequent and scattered thunderstorms (until 3:00 p.m. on Monday) and sometimes strong wind from the south, with gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour (km/h) until 6:00 p.m.
The Setúbal district also has a yellow warning until 3:00 p.m. due to the forecast of periods of rain or showerssometimes strong and accompanied by storms and strong gusts.
The orange notice indicates a moderate to high risk weather situation and the yellow is issued by the IPMA when there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
The IPMA forecasts for this Monday periods of rain or showers, more frequent and intense in the South region, with the possibility of occurrence of thunderstorms and light to moderate wind (up to 30 km/h) in the eastern quadrant, being moderate to strong (30 to 40 km/h) in the southern quadrant in the southern region until mid-afternoon, and in the mountains, with gusts of up to 70 km/h.
According to the Institute’s forecasts cited in a Sunday note from the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), there are conditions for the heavier precipitationwith an accumulation of between 10 and 20 mm/1 hour, the most critical period being between 00:00 and 15:00 on Monday, in the districts of Faro and Beja, as well as the possibility of extreme wind phenomena.
Given the weather forecasts, the ANEPC warned about the possibility of flooding in urban areas, due to the accumulation of rainwater due to the obstruction of the drainage systems.
He also warned about the possibility of flooding. overflow of watercourses, landslides by “slope instability” that can be exacerbated by the effects of forest fires, dragging of loose objects onto the roads, detachment of mobile structures and formation of groundwater tables.
In the note, Civil Protection recommends clearing drainage systems, fixing loose structures, paying special attention to circulation in areas with trees, due to the possibility of branches falling and breaking, special care near riverside areas, adopting a driving defensive and do not cross flooded areas.
