iPhone users will soon receive an update that until now was only available to those with Android devices.
And while Google has an official app store, the company doesn’t limit devices to this single market, meaning owners have plenty of options when it comes to adding software to their business phones.
And Apple has never followed that path, with the American tech giant locking their iPhones so users can’t download programs or download apps from unofficial sources.
In fact, the only place an app can be added to the iPhone is the Apple App Store, but that could change.
According to a Bloomberg report, Apple may be planning a change that will allow iPhone users to install things on their devices on other platforms.
The change in direction is believed to be due to an upcoming amendment to the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which states it wants to “end unfair practices by companies acting as gatekeepers to the online platform economy” .
In a media statement, the EU explained: “These are digital platforms that provide an important gateway between business users and consumers – their location can give them the ability to act as private rule makers , thereby creating a bottleneck in the digital economy. To address these issues, the DMA needs to fulfill the requirements that they must meet. set out a series of promises.”
It looks like these new rules will come into effect in 2024 and could mean that Apple not only allows third-party apps to be available, but sideloading as well. The American company has not yet made an official announcement, but it seems unlikely that it will allow any application to be installed without checking it.
Apple’s strict rules mean iPhone users are more likely to download apps with data-stealing malware.
This is something that cannot be said for Android users, who face warnings almost every week about dangerous apps that could expose their bank accounts.

Along with changes to apps, Apple will also adopt a new way for users to charge their devices.
The update comes as the European Union (EU) passed a new law that will force tech companies to use the same charging port on different devices. USB-C will be the port of choice for all phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU from 2024.
The news that Apple will ditch the existing Lightning jack for USB-C in future iPhones was confirmed by Greg Joswiak, the tech giant’s senior vice president of global marketing.
