The idea of intelligent extraterrestrial life has long fascinated scientists and the public, with many theories about what might or might not happen in deep space.
A recent study offers a new explanation for why extraterrestrials (if they exist) do not visit our planet – because there are no signs of intelligence here.
Essentially, they mean that we didn’t send visible signals from space until the 1930s, so the aliens didn’t have enough time to receive or respond to the message.
The radio waves reach about 15,000 stars and the planet orbiting them from the 400 billion stars in the Milky Way, the researchers said.
Furthermore, study author Amre Wandel, an astrophysicist at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, wrote in the paper that it takes time for any response messages from the aliens to return.
Essentially, only stars within 50 light-years have had enough time to respond since Earth began expanding into deep space. And not only that, Earth’s first radio signals were accidentally sent out into the universe, meaning it would be difficult for aliens to recognize them because of the mess they were in when they reached space within the light- year.
And it wasn’t until 1974 that we sent the first intentional, high-energy broadcast to aliens, the Arecibo message.
However, there have since been plans to send another message in the form of a Sign in the Galaxy (BITG) message.
Most of the Arecibo message will include a drawing of DNA, the solar system, and a diagram of male and female morphology, but it also contains a lot of information about basic math and science. Researchers say that this is all evidence that extraterrestrial life does not have enough time to respond to us.
Wandell believes his theory shows there are no intelligent aliens within 50 light-years of Earth, but that doesn’t rule them out somewhere in the universe.
This may be because the Earth is waiting for its technological signals to reach it, or its response is still on the way.
“The probability of contact is defined as the chance of finding a civilization close enough to detect the first radio emissions (radiosphere) and currently send a probe into the solar system,” Wandell wrote. It is very low on Earth unless civilizations are abundant.
“The Age of Communication is defined as the time when the possibility of communication became a system unit (since the beginning of wireless transmission). At that time, alien probes (or messages) become more likely. Unless the civilizations were very rich, the Age of Communication “seems to vary from a few hundred to several thousand years Thus, civilizations have been shown to be extremely unlikely. They cannot communicate unless their communication lifetime is at least several thousand years old.
