Storm Freddy kills seven in Mozambique

Tropical storm Freddy caused seven deaths after hitting the country on Friday, causing heavy flooding, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced Thursday.

According to the organization, a total of 9,268 people had to be transferred to 26 reception centers in the provinces of Inhambane, Gaza and Sofala.

Some 163,300 people were affected and 27,800 homes destroyed. Various supports have been announced to help with the situation. The European Commission has announced this Thursday 200,000 euros of humanitarian financing to help those most affected by the storm.

“European Union (EU) funds will support the Mozambique Red Cross to provide thehelps communities already affected by heavy rains and floods, as well as awareness and early warning actions,” he announced in a statement.

With a duration of three months, the project will benefit 60,000 people in the provinces of Gaza, Inhambane, Manica, Maputo, Sofala, Tete and Zambézia.

The funding is part of the overall EU contribution to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Emergency Disaster Response Fund.
