In the Taurida Cave in Crimea, a scientific complex appeared, equipped with GLONASS and GPS antennas to measure the strength of the expected earthquake.
And Russian scientists hope to record upcoming seismic activity with its help.
It came to the website of the Russian Geographical Society, and a report of the site said that the Crimean peninsula has all the conditions for an earthquake. This is due to the interaction of the Black Sea Plate with the Crimean Range. Even in ancient Greek sources we can find evidence of severe earthquakes in Crimea. For example, in the twentieth century, two severe earthquakes occurred on the peninsula, known as the two major earthquakes in Crimea in 1927, one of which in September 1927 had a strength of 9 degrees, causing massive destruction, requiring monitoring of geodynamic activity on the Crimean peninsula.
According to Sergey Berdnikov, director of the Southern Science Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, mathematical modeling is now being used to predict seismic activity. While scientists were working on their models, they discovered a new type of earthquake called a precursor. The complex of “GLONASS” and “GPS” antennas provides an opportunity to monitor the movement of the lithosphere plates and predict the occurrence of earthquakes.
The Southern Science Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences currently has a satellite antenna network in Russia’s Krasnodar Territory, while there is no such center in Crimea. It is planned to install two antennas in the area of “Turida” cave and near Sevastopol.
“The Taman Peninsula region has long been under pressure from the Black Sea Plate from the south, which led to a northern retreat of the northeast movement,” said Valery Shestopalov, senior researcher at the Southern Science Center.
It is worth noting that the Taurida Cave was discovered in 2018 during the construction of the multi-lane highway of the same name, which crossed the peninsula from east to west, becoming the main highway of Crimea. According to the Russian Geographical Society, the cave began to form about 5 million years ago, its size exceeds the size of all known caves in the interior hills of the Crimean Peninsula, and its length is about 1.3 thousand meters .
Among his finds were the tracks of seven elephants, three saber-toothed cats, many different kinds of wolves, two kinds of foxes and three or four different kinds of bears. The thigh bones of a giant ostrich weighing more than 450 km were also found.
