Drought: Government denies delay in recognizing situation in national territory due to lack of IPMA data

The Minister of Agriculture and Food, Maria do Céu Antunes, denied this Tuesday that the Government has been slow to recognize the situation of drought in the national territory, justifying that it only now did so due to European regulations.

In Beja, at the end of a meeting of the Alqueva Irrigation Surveillance Council (CAR), the official was questioned by journalists about whether the recognition of the drought in 40% of the national territory, on Monday, is too late.

Maria do Céu Antunes responded that, for this, the Government needs data from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) that certifies the weather conditions, such as the lack of rain in the last two months.

“Strictly speaking, just last week this happened in Portugal”, he is stressed.

Confronted by journalists with the case of Spain, the minister stressed that the neighboring country “has a much more serious situation than Portugal and could have triggered this statement earlier.”

“The rules are the same and apply in both countries equally. It is not a national standard and we can only trigger these measures with the European Commission. from the moment we meet this requirement”, he stressed.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food, supervised by Maria do Céu Antunes, recognized, on Monday, the situation of severe and extreme drought in about 40% of the national territory.

In a statement, the ministry guaranteed that it had reported the situation to the European Commission last week, adding that the adoption of a set of measures always depends on the “green light” from Brussels.
