Football fans will compete for the title of the most sustainable team at the 2030 World Cup

Football fans will be able to compete for the title of the most sustainable team at the 2030 World Cup by adopting behaviours that reduce their environmental footprint, in a championship that kicks off on Wednesday with the launch of the “PLAYER 0” app.

The initiative is the result of a collaboration between CEiiA – Engineering and Development Centre and the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) who want the 2030 World Cup – organised by Portugal, Spain and Morocco – to be held in the city of Lisbon. be the most sustainable in the history of football.

The kick-off will be on Wednesday at the QSP Summit, one of Europe’s largest management and marketing events, with the launch of the “PLAYER 0” app, which will record fans’ contributions to their team’s carbon neutrality.

It’s a game within a game. Just like in football there is a 12th player, who is the public, the ‘PLAYER 0’ is the fan who participates with his broadcasts. [de carbono (CO2)] avoided to offset the footprint of your selection. This is done through the platform. [do CEiiA para a sustentabilidade] “AYR,” explained the general director of CEiiA, José Rui Felizardo, to Lusa.

This platform, he explained, allows for “reliably quantifying the emissions avoided” when travelling between point A and point B within mobility routes previously defined by cities, transforming them, once validated, into environmental credits.

The difference between the average value defined for that trip and the value of the emission generated using, for example, means of transport such as the metro or the electric bus or combustion, represents the CO2 emission avoided, whose environmental credit is subsequently transferred by the fan to his team as a way of offsetting the footprint generated.

For José Rui Felizardo, this partnership with the FPF represents, due to its scale, “a great opportunity” for the development of technology in Portugal, directly and indirectly involving “four billion people”.

The aim is to encourage more sustainable behaviour from those who participate, linking “rationality to a passion for football and the planet”.

Assuming that the goals set are ambitious, the director general of CEiiA explains that, in six years, it will not be possible to quantify the impact of “Player 0” in reducing the footprint of the 2030 World Cup, since this number depends directly on the selected teams, whose countries have different environmental footprints.

The availability of the “app” It is only one part of this “complex and very demanding process from the point of view of work and research” which, due to its size, will involve other entities, namely universities and other research centres.

The “PLAYER 0” will be activated at the QSP Summit, an event that starts this Tuesday, with a simulation of a world championship in the AYR Neutral Arena, in which all participants of this event will be able to compete.

In this competition, the first two “PLAYER 0” shirts in the world will be awarded, offered by the FPF and autographed by the players of the Portuguese national team.

Located in Matosinhos, in the Porto district, CEiiA is an engineering and product development centre in sectors such as mobility, aeronautics and space.

In the area of mobility, it designed and developed the AYR sustainability platform – which integrates “Player 0” -, which quantifies, validates and values the emissions avoided, and allows their transaction with environmental credits.

Distinguished with several national and international awards, this platform is interoperable and integrable with other mobility and sustainability platforms, as well as means of mobility such as cars, bicycles and public transport, among others.
