Seven continental districts under yellow alert due to heat

Seven districts on the continent are on yellow alert this Friday due to the forecast of hot weather, with several municipalities at very high risk of rural fires, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

The districts of Évora, Beja, Portalegre, Setúbal, Castelo Branco, Guarda and Bragança will be on yellow alert until 6 p.m. due to the persistence of high maximum temperature values.

The yellow warning, the least serious on a scale of three, is issued by the IPMA whenever a risk situation arises for certain activities depending on the weather conditions.

Due to the heat, the municipalities of São Brás de Alportel and Tavira, in the Faro district, are at maximum risk of rural fires this Friday.

More than 50 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Bragança, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Vila Real, Viseu and Beja are also at very high risk of fire this Friday.

On Saturday, eight municipalities in the Faro district, two in Portalegre and six in Bragança will be at maximum risk of rural fires.

According to IPMA calculations, Fire danger will remain high in some districts at least until Tuesday.

This risk, determined by the IPMA, has five levels, ranging from low to maximum, and the calculations are obtained from the air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and the amount of precipitation in the last 24 hours.

The IPMA forecasts clear or partly cloudy skies on the continent on Friday, with the possibility of scattered showers accompanied by storms in the northern and central interior during the afternoon and light to moderate winds, being strong in the mountains.

Maximum temperatures are also expected to fall, except in the northeast of Trás-os-Montes and Beira Alta.

Minimum temperatures will range between 16 degrees Celsius (in Porto, Guarda, Coimbra and Leiria) and 22 (in Faro) and maximum temperatures between 24 (in Aveiro) and 39 (in Évora).
