Italy raises alert level to maximum after Stromboli volcano eruption

Italy’s Civil Protection has raised the alert level to the maximum due to a new eruption of the Stromboli volcano, located on the island of the same name in the south of the country.

The meeting was called “following the rapid evolution of the activities affecting the volcano” of Mount Stromboli, characterized by continuous but low-intensity activity.

The authorities asked the population of the island, where around 500 people liveto “stay informed and scrupulously follow the safety instructions,” according to a statement from the Italian Civil Protection.

The red alert level implies the reinforcement of the volcano surveillance system and allows the civil protection of Stromboli to count on the support of experts from the Italian Civil Protection.

The same note points out that the president of the Municipality of Lipari, to which Stromboli belongs, participated in the meeting and “has already established initial precautionary measures aimed at protecting” the residents of the island.

Riccardo Gullo “will be constantly informed about the evolution of the situation to ensure constant and correct information to the population,” said the Italian Civil Protection.
