The European Union postpones for one year the rules that prohibit products from deforestation

This Wednesday, the Council of the European Union (EU) extended for one more year the deadline for the entry into force of the regulation on deforestation in the community bloc, which prohibits the marketing of products that come from deforestation.

What is at stake is the need for Member States, third countries and also companies to need more time to adapt to the changes, the council explains in a statement.

The directive in question stipulates that products that come from deforestation cannot be sold in European Union countries.

In other words, products that have been made from factories built in deforested areas, which are a direct product of deforestation, can no longer circulate within the 27 countries of the political-economic bloc.

This list includes wood, livestock, cocoa, soybeans, palm oil, coffee, rubber and derivatives of these products..

The rule has been in force since June 29, 2023 and must be applied in its entirety as of December 30 of this year.

With this change, the application will only begin on December 30, 2025, for larger companies, and June 30, 2026, for smaller companies.
