The negotiator of the European Union (EU) at the UN climate conference (COP29), Wopke Hoesktra, stated this Thursday that the draft agreement published overnight is “unacceptable” as it is.
“I’m not going to downplay the situation. It is clearly unacceptable in the current situation,” said the European Commissioner for Climate, in a press conference.
The EU considers, in particular, that at this stage the draft final agreement, which includes several texts, including one on climate finance, not ambitious enough in terms of greenhouse gas reduction, due to opposition from oil-producing countries.
“I’m sorry, but there is still a lot of work to do for the parties and the presidency of Azerbaijan. “I am sure that there is not a single ambitious country that thinks this is enough,” Wopke Hoekstra told reporters.
In theory, the UN climate conference in Baku ends on Friday and countries’ positions remain irreconcilable on the amount of climate aid provided by developed countries to developing countries.
