The Ukrainian air force accused Russia of launching an intercontinental ballistic missile against the Dnieper region of Ukraine. Western sources admit that the missile may not have been of the intercontinental type, but Volodymyr Zelensky has already responded that “all characteristics point to it being so.” Russia has not yet commented.

Ukrainian forces announced Thursday morning that one intercontinental ballistic missile, one aeroballistic missile and seven cruise missiles were launched against “factories and critical infrastructure” in the city of Dnipro, in central Ukraine. Ukrainian defenses managed to shoot down six of the seven cruise missiles, but no intercepted the aeroballistic missile (Kinzhal) nor intercontinental ballistic missiles, which are two of the most sophisticated in the Russian arsenal. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the unfired missiles did not cause “substantial” damage.

Previously, the authorities of the Dnipropetrovsk region, the capital of which is Dnipro, reported a massive attack that caused serious damage to “an industrial infrastructure” in the city.

This attack focused on Dnipro comes after at least the United States, Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal have closed its embassies in kyiv on Wednesday due to the danger of a massive Russian attack on Ukrainian territory.

Western sources admit that the missile may not be intercontinental. Moscow had no comment.

A few hours after the alleged attack with an intercontinental ballistic missile, Western sources questioned, in statements to Skynews and ABC, whether any of the missiles launched had been intercontinental type. According to sources interviewed by both media, it was an attack with ballistic missiles, but not intercontinental ones.

Volodymyr Zelensky would respond that “all characteristics,” including speed and altitude, are those of an ICBM. An investigation is underway, he said.

On Telegram, the Ukrainian president accused Russia of using “new missiles” and using Ukraine as a “training ground.” Zelensky says that a “new Russian rocket” was launched this Thursday and that it has “all the characteristics” of an intercontinental ballistic missile: speed and altitude. However, he adds that an investigation is underway.

“It is obvious that Putin is using Ukraine as a training ground,” the Ukrainian leader said in a message on Telegram. Zelensky calls Russia the “crazy neighbor” who “once again showed what he really is and how he despises the dignity, freedom and life of the general population.” He even says that Putin also showed that he was “scared.”

So far no reaction has been heard from Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov this morning declined to comment on the alleged launch of the first intercontinental ballistic missile. “At this moment, I have nothing to say on this issue,” Peskov responded to a request for comment from the Russian military.

The same position was adopted by the spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, but in a caricatured episode. CNN International says Zakharova answered the phone while answering questions from journalists at a news conference. On the other hand, someone (whom CNN cannot identify) ordered him not to comment on the attack in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region.

CNN transcribes the conversation:

– “Hello. Yes, I’m in an information session,” he said when answering the call.

Journalists at the scene heard a male voice respond that there had been a “ballistic missile attack on Yuzmash,” the Soviet name for Pivdenmash, an aerospace factory in Dnipro. The man says that it is “forbidden to talk about [o assunto] – don’t make any comments.”

Zakharova replied: “Yes, thank you.” And he hung up. CNN stresses that it is not clear whether the phone call was staged or whether Zakharova inadvertently revealed information about the overnight attack on Ukraine.

Zakharova tried to explain herself to Tass. “Prior to the briefing, questions were asked about conflicting material on the Internet. I checked with experts if this was within our scope. The answer came during the briefing: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not comment. Therefore, there is no intrigue,” he said, quoted by CNN International.
