China searches for Siberian tiger that attacked a farmer in the northeast of the country

Chinese authorities are trying to locate a Siberian tiger that recently attacked a farmer in the city of Boli in northeast China’s Heilongjiang province.

The feline severely bit the man’s left hand, which prevented amputation after several hours of surgery, the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post reported this Thursday.

HE The incident occurred on Monday near Changtai village.where a viral video showed the tiger in front of a residence, moments before a neighbor managed to close the iron gate to prevent another attack.

Experts confirmed to local press that it was a Siberian tiger and local authorities warned residents to “avoid mountainous areas” and “go out in groups” while efforts are made to locate the animal.

Since Tuesday, the Heilongjiang Forestry and Grassland Administration has strengthened security measures and stated that the presence of such tigers in the region is not common.

Researchers from the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences suggest that the animal may have crossed the border into Russia, about 100 kilometers away.

The Siberian tiger, the largest tiger subspecies, is protected in China, where conservation efforts have increased its population.

China’s Northeast National Park, created in 2021, is home to around 70 tigers, and victims of attacks can file compensation claims if such incidents are confirmed.

In April 2021, authorities captured a wild Siberian tiger that had bitten a villager and, after a veterinary examination, released it into a dense forest.
