United States.. An unprecedented historic verdict against a man accused of wrongdoing, including spitting on police

A Texas man was sentenced to 70 years in prison for spitting on Lubbock police officers during his May arrest.

Police arrested 36-year-old Larry Pearson on domestic violence charges for allegedly causing “multiple visible wounds” by repeatedly punching a woman in the face.

Upon receiving information, Pearson became angry when the police did not arrest the victim and began kicking the door of the police car. When two police officers opened the door to tell him to stop, Pearson spat at them and continued even after they arrived at the Lubbock County Detention Center. The jury found him guilty of two counts of harassing a public official.

During the trial’s closing arguments, prosecutor Jessica Gorman said Pearson had prior convictions for burglary and domestic violence. As a result, he faces at least 25 years in prison, adding: “If you’re going to live a life of crime, you’re going to do it with other criminals in prison.”

Pearson’s attorney said the decision was made because of a “minor misdemeanor” that got out of hand.
