New film by Maria de Medeiros opens in Portugal in June

The film “To our children”, directed by Maria de Medeiros, will be released in Portuguese cinemas on June 1, confirmed the Observer with the distributor Midas Filmes.

The play, shot in Rio de Janeiro, tells the story of two lesbian women who want to have a child, and is an adaptation of Laura Castro’s play of the same name, which borrows its name from the Ivan Lins song “Aos Nosso Filhos”. . (1978). “It is a reflection on motherhood and sexuality, adoption and artificial insemination, but also on Brazil’s political past and present,” says the film’s synopsis.

The Portuguese actress and director went down in history for having participated in the play, which was on tour in Brazil. On stage, she played the character of Vera, a survivor of the dictatorship unable to accept her daughter’s homosexuality. In the big screen adaptation, the same character is played by the Brazilian actress Marieta Severa, in a cast that also includes Laura Castro, Marta Nóbrega, José de Abreu, Cláudio Lins and Ricardo Pereira. “I come from ‘Capitães de Abril’, which was a men’s war film, and this is a very feminine film. Apart from an overwhelming majority of women, everything is very feminine in the film”, Maria de Medeiros compared to Agência Lusa in 2018, speaking of the project.

“To our children” had been waiting a long time to be released in Portugal. The latest recordings occurred between the two rounds of the Brazilian presidential elections, in 2018, which would finally bring Jair Bolsonaro to power. “Brazil was very confident at that time in its democracy, in its society, in its future. I was even surprised by the ease with which we got financing for the film. We started writing this story as a kind of solar comedy, close to reality and in the course of five years, Brazil completely changed and society became grayer. Our script too ”, the director also explained to Lusa, already in 2021.

Before arriving in Portugal, the film opens in Spain, “at the beginning of May,” said Maria de Medeiros on Instagram.
