Sri Lanka has appointed the first ministers of a “unity” government tasked with saving the country from a deep economic crisis, but it does not enjoy the support of the opposition.

The office of President Gotabay Rajapaksa announced the appointment of four ministers, including Gamini Peiris, who returned to the Foreign Office just days after he left after the dissolution of the previous government. Peres and three other ministers are members of the Sri Lankan Bodogan Party of Peramune Rajapaksa.

An entire important financial portfolio remains vacant while Sri Lanka negotiates a rescue plan with the International Monetary Fund.

Samaga’s largest opposition party, Gana Balugaya, and four other parties refused to support the government while Rajapaksa was president.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was appointed last Thursday, is trying to build a multi-party coalition that could begin to mend the country’s deteriorating financial situation. However, opposition parties considered his appointment illegitimate, and some deputies called for new elections.

A few weeks ago, he reportedly organized mass demonstrations against the president, whom opponents accuse of mismanagement and corruption. Hundreds of people are still protesting in front of his office in the Colombo capital, calling for his resignation.
