Washington on Monday expressed its support for peaceful assembly and freedom of expression in Iran, noting that Iranian citizens have the right to hold their government accountable.
“Brave Iranian protesters are defending their rights,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Twitter.
The valiant Iranian protesters stood up for their rights. Iranian citizens have the right to hold their government accountable. We support the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, online and offline, without fear of violence and retaliation.

“The Iranian people have the right to hold their government accountable. We support their right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression online and offline without fear of violence and retaliation. ”
Over the past two days, several cities in Iran have witnessed hundreds of protests in rejection of the government’s decision to raise the prices of many staple foods.
The Islamic Republic is facing an economic and vigorous crisis due to Washington’s re-imposition of sanctions on Tehran after the United States decided to unilaterally withdraw from the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program in 2018.
In addition to inflation exceeding the 40 percent annual threshold, the sanctions have left a severe crisis that has particularly affected living standards and the exchange rate of Iran’s local currency.
