The Iranian Fars News Agency confirmed on Tuesday that a meeting with the Iranian and Saudi foreign ministers will be held in Iraq soon.
“Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan will meet in Iraq in the near future,” the semi-official news agency quoted a member of the Iranian parliament as saying.
The Iranian official added that the two sides will discuss issues related to bilateral relations, including the reopening of embassies and regional issues such as the Yemeni crisis.
Saudi Arabia severed ties with Iran in January 2016 after its embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad were attacked by protesters over the execution of Saudi Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.
In 2021, the two countries, with the facilitation of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, began talks aimed at improving relations in Baghdad.
Four meetings were held between April and September. Tehran confirmed in November that a fifth round would be subject to Riyadh’s “seriousness.”
