Mexican government data shows more than 100,000 people are officially listed as missing, as families are calling to find victims of organized crime -related violence.
The National Register of Missing Persons of the Home Office was established in 1964 and is periodically updated, and records show that the number of missing persons has increased from approximately 73,000 to over 100,000 over the past two years, most are men.
Human rights groups and families of the missing have expressed their concerns and urged the government to immediately conduct more effective searches and investigations.
The death toll has risen since 2007, after former President Felipe Calderon sent the military into the streets to fight drug traffickers and unleash the violence that the current administration continues to oppose.
A report released last week revealed that cases of missing migrants in Mexico nearly quadrupled from 2020 to 2021.
