The Danish newspaper “Berlingske” wrote that the US planned to modernize the military base of “Toli” in northern Greenland.
The newspaper cited a report by the U.S. Regulatory Authority that the U.S. plans to allocate billions of dollars to Arctic needs, including improving the Tolly base.
This was confirmed in the newspaper by knowledgeable sources in the United States. In a statement made by the U.S. Air Force Command, taken from the U.S. embassy, it said the U.S. is interested in building this facility, whose infrastructure is aging.
But the Greenland government and the Danish Parliament do not know what the military base modernization plan is. This issue was never discussed in the Greenland and Defense Committees of Parliament.
“We don’t want to talk,” the Greenland leader said, quoting the newspaper. Bibaluk Leungi Rasmussen, from parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Security Committee, said:
According to the agreement between the United States, Greenland and Denmark, the American side must consult with the Danish and Greenland authorities and inform them of all serious changes to their military plans in Greenland. He also does not have to apply for the appropriate permits in this area.
