Coffee company Starbucks announced today in a memo to its employees working in Russia that it has “decided to close all 130 of its coffee shops in the country,” emphasizing that “their brand is no longer present in Russia.”

The company said it would continue to pay salaries to its approximately 2,000 Russian employees for six months and help them transition to new jobs.

Starbucks’ decision follows a similar move by American fast food company McDonald’s last week, which decided to sell all of its stores to local franchisor Alexander Gofur, who will not allow the company to use his name or menu for food.

Starbucks in Russia is owned and operated by Alshaya Group, a Kuwaiti-based franchise operator.

It should be noted that Starbucks will enter the Russian market in 2017.

In early March, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Starbucks announced that it would keep its Russian cafes open but would donate profits to humanitarian aid in Ukraine.
