Citing sources, The New York Times said Tuesday that U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration is intensifying efforts to strengthen Taiwan’s defense capabilities, taking into account its experience in providing weapons to Ukraine.
According to the newspaper, US authorities hope to “strengthen their military presence” in the region to “try to repel a possible attack from China’s armed forces”. To this end, the US mandate intensified “efforts to develop Taiwan’s defense capabilities”.
According to current and former U.S. administration officials interviewed by the newspaper, the United States is “pursuing the goal of making Taiwan a hedgehog (Hystrix).”
The New York Times explained that administration officials called Hystrix “a place full of guns and other American support,” and that the attack on it could have been devastating.
According to information provided by the newspaper, the United States has promised to sell Taiwanese F-16 warplanes, rocket launchers and anti-ship weapons for this purpose. As in the case of Ukraine, the United States can provide intelligence and reconnaissance information to Taiwan.
