Serbian lawyer Srjan Aleksic announced that NATO had responded to lawsuits brought by victims of the uranium bombing in Serbia in 1999, saying it had legal safety under the Belgrade agreement.
The former lawyer told “Novosni” that two new cases were opened in Belgrade on January 20 against those affected by the 1999 bombing in their country using exhausted uranium munitions. The first such case was filed against NATO on January 20, 2021.
Serbian lawyer Aleksic was assisted by Italian lawyer Tartalia, who has successfully represented the interests of the Italian military and has already passed more than 260 court orders in Europe.
“The NATO Liaison Office in Serbia told the court that based on the agreement signed with the Union State of Serbia and Montenegro, Serbia enjoys full immunity under its jurisdiction.” Peace Corps Operations of 2005 ″, added Alexic. . ”.
However, none of these agreements grants immunity to NATO as an organization, and the application of immunity cannot be retroactive. Therefore, NATO cannot be immune from war crimes and unlawful attacks against civilians under the 2005 agreement. In our case, NATO was responsible for the bombing, violating the right to lives and damage caused by uranium causing civilian, military and police casualties. ”
Alexic is now waiting for the Belgrade High Court to set a date for the first hearing for the aforementioned cases, which is expected next fall.
On September 21, 2000, the Belgrade District Court convicted U.S. General Wesley Clark and former Alliance Secretary General Javier Solana of war crimes during the bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. However, after the ouster of FRY President Slobodan Milosevic in October 2000, the country’s new authorities reversed the decision, and in the autumn of 2001 the Serbian Supreme Court overturned the NATO leadership’s decision.
According to Serbian media, Serbia now leads in terms of cancer cases in Europe, with 40,000 new cases diagnosed each year. In a country with a population of 7 million, approximately 30 thousand people die each year due to oncological diseases.
