Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said Friday that all Renamo military bases should be closed before the end of the year.
By the end of 2022, the four remaining Renamo bases may be closed,” said the Mozambican head of state.
Nyusi was speaking at the opening of the fifth session of the central committee of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), the ruling party of which he is president.
In the field of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) of the guerrilla National Resistance of Mozambique (Renamo), 12 of the 16 bases have already been deactivated which had the armed wing of the main opposition party, added Filipe Nyusi.
The Frelimo leader said that 68% of the approximately 5,000 Renamo guerrillas have already demobilized, “are in their homes” and in the process of social reintegration.
Despite the success of the DDR, he continued, the Government will continue the dialogue with Renamowith a view to preserving peace.
“We defend that peace, stability, unity and progress must be the supreme interest of all Mozambicans”, concluded Filipe Nyusi.
The DDR is part of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement signed between the Government of Frelimo and Renamo in August 2019.
The agreement was the third between the two parties, always after cycles of armed violence, mainly in the center of the country.
