The newly elected mayor of a town on the Mexican border is currently working amid a corruption investigation by officials in the state of Tamaulipas.
This week, the head of the Tamaulipas Attorney General’s (FGJ) Anti-Corruption Division confirmed that there is a valid arrest warrant for Reinosa Mayor Carlos Victor “Maquito” Peña Ortiz. The newly elected mayor is a member of Mexico’s ruling Morena party. This week, the politician mysteriously asked him to step down from his post and hasn’t been seen in Mexico since. While running through Mexico, the politician was spotted at various bars in South Texas.
According to Tamaulipas (FGJ) case file CP/0017/2021, Peña Ortiz was charged with “handling illegal funds”. A state judge issued an arrest warrant for Peña on May 18, days before he asked for leave.
Peña Ortiz, injunction or “amparo‘, in order to prevent state authorities from arresting him. The man known as Makito is the son of former Reinosa mayor Maki Ortiz, who also filed a lawsuit against his arrest. However, it is not clear whether there is a valid arrest warrant.
According to Breitbart Texas, Peña Ortiz’s controversy arose when she and other members of Morena’s party became involved with Sergio Carmona, a cartel-affiliated fuel theft mogul. While unidentified gunmen killed Carmona late last year, a wealth of information has emerged in recent months about how the fuel theft boss financed Morena’s candidates’ campaigns and gave them luxury SUVs.
It is also linked to Américo Villarreal de Carmona, Morena’s current candidate for governor of Tamaulipas. Last week, Breitbart Texas reported that Villarreal’s son was accused of bank fraud in the Netherlands.
