British Prime Minister Boris Johnson won a vote of confidence on Monday, June 6, 2022, overcoming a challenge from lawmakers from within the ruling Conservative Party.
According to Graham Brady, chairman of the party committee that oversaw the vote, Johnson received 211 votes to 148.
On Monday, Britain’s Conservative MPs began a secret ballot to oust Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who could oust him.
The vote follows disagreements among party members over Johnson’s breach of the Corona epidemic and disagreements over his economic policies and leadership style in government.
According to the British network “BBC”, the voting continues for two hours inside the parliament and the result will be announced one hour after the end of the voting, at exactly 21:00 local time.
Johnson must win the support of at least 180 Conservative MPs to remain prime minister.
In a letter to lawmakers, Johnson called on his party members to support him and rejected the no-confidence motion. According to the network, he added: “I support you tonight, because I know how much we can achieve together.
“With your support, I believe we have a big prize in our hands. We can put an end to the media obsession. We can continue to work without stopping the noise,” he continued.
“I am absolutely convinced that if we can unite in the coming days, we will win again over time, regain the trust of the 14 million who voted for us, and continue to serve the country we love.”
Many Conservative lawmakers, meanwhile, said they had lost confidence in his government because of a scandal involving parties at the government house during the shutdown due to the Corona virus outbreak.
Johnson, who took over as prime minister in 2019, is under increasing pressure as he fails to report on alcohol-laden parties with senior officials in power at a time when Britain was in quarantine to counter the Corona epidemic. . .
Johnson said he took responsibility for violating the Covid-19 general isolation law in his office on Downing Street and corrected an earlier statement to parliament that the guidelines had always been adhered to.
“I take responsibility for everything that happened in my presence … I was shocked by some of the behavior,” he told lawmakers on Wednesday, adding that he was unaware of the abuses. “My presence at this time, even for a short time, was against the law, but it was clearly not the case for some of those gatherings after I left, and for others it was not even me,” he added. “He was in the building at the time.”
He also reiterated his apology for attending a daily rally on his birthday in June 2020, for which police imposed a fine.
It is noteworthy that if Johnson is ousted, there will be a race to lead the Conservative Party, with several prominent government ministers likely to be nominated.
