The United Nations Trade and Development Organization (UNCTAD) has warned that the food crisis now in the world as a result of the war in Ukraine could turn into “a food disaster next year.”

“We are on the cusp of the most severe global cost-of-living crisis and the report illustrates the interconnected nature of the three dimensions of the crisis: food, energy and financial,” she said, adding that “tackling just one dimension will not resolve the global crisis in which we we are now.”

She pointed out that “the current food crisis could quickly turn into a food disaster on a global scale in 2023.”

“If the current war in Ukraine continues and grain and fertilizer prices continue to rise in the next growing season, the current crisis could spread to other staples such as rice and affect billions of people,” Greenspan added.

Greenspan emphasized that “there is no solution to the cost-of-living crisis without a solution to the financial crisis, and therefore developing countries urgently need financial support from international organizations.”
