Ukraine responds to Biden’s Zelensky comment by ignoring Russian invasion warnings

Ukrainian President Sergei Nikiforov’s spokesman said on Saturday that Joe Biden’s comments about Ukraine ignoring US warnings about a possible Russian invasion needed to be clarified.

In statements to the place The Ukrainian news outlet LIGA.net, Nikiforov claimed that Volodymyr Zelensky spoke three or four times on the phone earlier this year with his American counterpart about the situation in Ukraine and that Zelensky called for sanctions against Russia. “So the phrase ‘didn’t listen’ probably needs to be clarified,” the spokesman argued.

Another adviser, Mykhailo Podoliac, claimed that Ukraine knew that Russia was preparing to invade and argued that the country was prepared for various aggressive scenarios. The only doubt concerned the magnitude of the attack, which could not be predicted, he told LIGA.net.

The scale of the invasion “shocked many countries,” including Ukraine’s partners, but Podoliac said Zelensky heeded the warnings.

Joe Biden said on Friday that his Ukrainian counterpart refused to listen to US warnings about a possible Russian invasion. Speaking at a fundraiser in Los Angeles, the president of the United States of America said that many people thought he was exaggerating the situation in Ukraine, when it was obvious that Vladimir Putin was headed for the border.

“Zelensky didn’t listen and a lot of people didn’t either. I understand why they didn’t want to hear it, but he [Putin] advanced,” Biden said, according to AFP.
