In an article titled “Made in America, Shot in the West Bank: The Bullet That Killed Palestinian Journalist Shirin Abu Akle,” the British website The Independent confirmed that “US officials are walking on eggshells” in the murder case of Shirin Abu Akle, correspondent ” Al Jazeera,” notes that “despite Abu Akila’s American citizenship, the FBI was unable to conduct its own investigation, as is often the case when Americans are killed abroad.”
US officials say they are waiting for the results of the Israeli investigation, while Israeli officials say their investigation failed to determine who fired the bullets that killed Abu Akila, their forces, or the Palestinians.
On the other hand, the website states: “Al Jazeera published an image of the American-made bullet that killed its Palestinian reporter Shirin Abu Akleh in the occupied West Bank last month, and the bullet was a 5.56mm caliber from an M4 rifle , which is often used by Israeli forces.”
Al Jazeera quoted former Jordanian Major General Fayez al-Duwayri as saying it was “a type of munition used by the Israeli army.” The site states that “the bullet is often referred to as a ‘piercing bullet’ due to its ability to penetrate armor.”
Al Jazeera’s report states: “A powerful bullet pierced her helmet, her head and bounced off the inside of the helmet she was wearing.”
The Independent noted that “Israeli authorities also refuse to disclose the results of an internal investigation into their conduct during Abu Akle’s funeral, in which police were caught on camera beating mourners as they attempted to carry her coffin.”
Next month, US President Joe Biden is due to make his first visit to Israel since he was elected in 2020.
Asked by a reporter if Biden would raise the issue with Israelis, White House spokesman John Kirby said that “press freedom means a lot to President Biden and his foreign policy is really based on values like freedom of the press; values such as human rights and civil rights. He will not be ashamed to raise these issues with any foreign leader anywhere in the world.”
