“A stubborn revolutionary.” This is how Gustavo Petro defines himself, the first openly “progressive” president of Colombia. Feared by businessmen -he is accused of wanting to transform the country into a new Venezuela- and assuming himself as the defender of the most disadvantaged classes, the new head of state, who will be sworn in next August, will open a new chapter in Colombian politics, trying to unite a fragmented country.
With a storied past that included participation in a revolutionary guerrillaGustavo Petro was a member of various leftist parties. Having held important positions, such as that of mayor of Bogotá, the new President has moderated the discourse over the years, to the point of emphasizing that the idea of the left is “anachronistic.” Sources close to the presidential campaign admitted to the Ámbito newspaper that he had gained “a certain maturity” and now he is a “more serene and peaceful person.” In this modulation of discourse, Petro came to assume himself as capitalist, while advocating a less unequal distribution of wealth among the population.
