Iran has executed more than 100 people in the first three months of 2022, according to a report by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday.
About 260 people were executed in 2020 and at least 310 in 2021, according to Nada al-Nashif, deputy director of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, while presenting her latest report on Iran to the UN Human Rights Council.
He explained that between January 1 and March 20, “at least 105 people were executed, many of them belonging to minorities.”
Al-Nashif said Guttierez’s report indicates an increase in executions for less serious crimes, including drug-related crimes.
“The death penalty continues to be imposed on charges that do not reach the most serious crimes and in ways that are contrary to the standards of a fair trial,” he added.
The statement lamented that Iran continues to impose the death penalty on juveniles, in violation of international law.
He added that between August 2021 and March 2022, at least two juvenile offenders were executed, and more than 85 juveniles are still on death row.
