An El Paso police officer will be sentenced to two years in prison for helping his father run a cocaine operation from his home.
This week, Monica Lisette Garcia, 24-year-old El Paso police officer at the time of the crime, appeared before US Judge David Guadarrama and was sentenced to 24 months in prison on drug conspiracy charges. Garcia had previously indicted in one of four drug trafficking cases on August 9, 2021, as part of a plea deal he signed with federal prosecutors.
According to the Texas Western District Attorney’s Office, Garcia used her position with the El Paso Police Department to avoid detection by law enforcement when her stepfather, Fred Saenz, was conducting a cocaine distribution operation. Saenz sells drugs from his home and has a separate area to store drug shipments. Garcia will counter surveillance and check license plates to try and find undercover agents who can approach the operation.
The case began in August 2020 when El Paso police and US Drug Enforcement Administration agents learned about a street drug operation selling high-quality cocaine under the guise of “fraud.” Authorities made several clandestine purchases and put Saenz’s home under surveillance. In November 2020, authorities arrested Saenz and a month later Garcia. Saenz pleaded guilty to a drug conspiracy with four charges against him. He was sentenced to three and a half years in prison.
Court documents did not mention the source of Saenza’s cocaine or the case’s connection to the Mexican drug cartel.
