A Spanish judge gave an eight-year-old the option to change his gender on his birth certificate, saying the boy was old enough to make a decision.
A civil registry judge in Ourense, Spain, has given a child born a woman who wishes to be recognized as a man the opportunity to change his gender on a birth certificate and other official documents.
The boy’s parents first tried to change the boy’s name when the boy was five, and asked to change his gender in May, but in September a judge rejected the request, saying the boy wasn’t old enough, the newspaper reported. World reports.

Euforia Familias Trans-Aliadas, an association of transgender supporters, informed the family, who later appealed the decision and stated that the first judge did not question the child. The new judge of the case conducted an interview and determined that the child was “mature enough” to be able to change gender.
Noting that the child was believed to be a boy for years, the judge said, “The fact that minors cannot correct their gender in vital records is that they are deprived of their sexual identity rights.”
The decision, adopted on June 10 but not announced until Monday, came as the Spanish government pushed for a new transgender law that would allow anyone over the age of 16 to change their gender on public record without needing medical needs or hormones.
Anyone over the age of 16 who wants to change their gender just needs to request it from the registry office and come back three months later to confirm their decision. They will have six months to reverse the decision, after which they will have to go to court to change their gender or name again.
